As much as humans are humans and machines are machines, the line between humans and machines are getting fainter as machines are been developed to think in a way that is synonymous to humans.
Traditionally, machines are meant to perform tasks under the control of humans which means that humans do the reasoning while the machines execute the jobs, but with the recent developments in computer sciences, machines are made to think, reason, learn and consequently react in a more human-like manner. This is owed to the invention of artificial intelligence.
So, if we could make things a little easier; we can start by understanding artificial intelligence at its most basic.
What is AI?
Artificial Intelligence is an area of computer science that focuses on making machines perform tasks and solve problems in ways similar to humans. This is a fine knit of in-depth understanding of integral biology, computer science and computer engineering generally as machines are designed to think, perform, learn, comprehend and address issues if not like humans, in ways that are very similar to those of human.
How AI works
How AI works is a question with long answer, but basically, it works by accumulating data over time, running analyzing the data as fast as possible, identifying key data points, patterned using intelligent algorithms which are engineered to get more accurate over time. Not so clear cut for the rank and file I know, perhaps but it is not as difficult as it seems. Albeit it is a vast field of computer science, it is a collection of algorithms based on statistical models and superb at isolating features in data at ever increasing speeds.
AI has affected the evolution of machines in different forms, and these forms include:
Machine Learning, a core part of AI that emphasize the ability of machines to learn from previous experiences and make better predictions of future events. Machine learning, although faster, is a process just similar to humans learning from experiences which are brought about by exposure to various occurrences (data, in the case of machines).
Deep learning, an advanced application of machine learning that is perfect for speech and image recognition using vast neural networks to learn intricate patterns.
Computer Vision comprises of CCTV and other visual abilities of the computer like face and motion recognition which are made possible by the computer’s reliance on pattern recognition and deep learning.
Natural language Processing (NLP) and Cognitive Computing are also forms of AI that focus on the possibilities of natural, human-like communication and interaction between humans and machines. These strive to make machines understand and react to data the same way that humans do.
There are those in online and in print material that believe in a Dystopian future caused by the expanding presence and limitless (or so it seems capacity) of Artificial Intelligence, I however do not. The potential for good in my opinion far outweighs the bad. Take some time to research further, the substantial improvements across you or other industries to gauge what types of benefits versus resource commitments you should make.
